Classroom Rules
I teach and expect students to learn to follow five rules, which we will discuss in depth and practice daily so that we can have a pleasant, respectful classroom environment:
At the end of the day, students who have spent no time in the Thinking Chair during the day will get a green dot on their hand to show to their parents at home (please let me know if a dot on the hand is not ok). When your student comes home with a green dot on his or her hand, please praise him or her for great behavior at school. When your student comes home without a green dot, please talk with him or her about proper, respectful student behavior and emphasize your expectations for your child. Thank you!
Homework
Students will receive a Homework folder that they should bring to school every morning and take home every afternoon. The Homework folder will include the following items:
I frequently send small, photocopied books home for your child to keep in his/her Book Envelope. Your child may keep those books and read them again and again for practice.
Beginning about October, I will send one-page reading passages home for your child to practice reading. I call these passages "Six-Times Stories" because students need to read each passage at least 6 times at home, then bring the story back to school to read aloud to me. The passages increase in difficulty, and most students will need to practice each passage several times at home before they are ready to return the passage to school and read it to me. Each time your child “passes off” a reading passage, I will give him or her a small reward and a new passage to take home and practice.
Attendance/Arrival/Dismissal
Daily Schedule: Mon.–Thurs. 9:00am–3:45pm; Fri. 9:00am–1:40pm
Children will line up in the front of the building by out classroom door in the morning. After school, students will exit through same door so they can get on their bus or wait for an adult to pick them up. If your child does not ride a bus, please make sure he or she knows exactly what the pick-up plans are (e.g., Who will pick up? Walking or driving? Where will you meet?). This will help to reduce anxiety for both of you. As the weather becomes colder, please help your child dress appropriately to stay warm outdoors before school and at recess.
Please help your child get to school on time every day. School days begin much more happily if students are not rushed or late. If your child is late, he or she must check in at the main office before coming to class.
Students who are absent can pick up missed assignments the next day they are present. If your child will miss school for medical issues, family vacations, or other reasons, please contact the office (385-646-5055).

Our schedule varies a bit daily, but in general, it looks like this:

We also have weekly "specials" (Music, P.E., Drama, Library) at various times during the week

If you choose to send treats (treats are totally optional), they must be store-bought (Granite District policy). Please do not send birthday party invitations for your child to distribute at school.

First Grade Goals & Objectives
Utah has adopted core curriculum standards in most subject areas for each grade. These standards provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. You can find these standards for first grade at the following website: https://www.uen.org/core/
